Socially Engaged PrintmakingSocially engaged printmaking is intended to inform the viewer, change opinion and inspire action. Printed images can be made in multiples and distributed widely.
Socially engaged printmaking dates from Fransisco Goya depicting the disasters of war in 1810 to Käthe Kollwitz expressing the horrors of the aftermath of WW1. It continues through the 20th century with Elizabeth Catlett's prints depicting important African-American heroes and the black experience in America. Contemporary works by the artist Swoon continue the tradition today. These are just a few examples. Project: Making a Statement
