Sketchbook Activity: Line & Mark Styles
Divide page into 4 sections. Choose 4 artists above. Make marks in each section like the artists you chose. The goal is not to copy the drawings but to be inspired by the marks. On the next page, fill the page with experiments of your own marks. |

Sketchbook Activity: Blind Contour Drawings
#1 Turn from your paper and look at your non-drawing hand. Start by looking at the wrinkles in your hand. Begin drawing going from wrinkle to wrinkle, edge to edge. Draw only what you see in the palm of your hand. Do not look at your drawing until you are done. #2 Choose a small object to hold in your non-drawing hand. Begin by looking at one edge and trace the edge with your eyes and you move your pencil. Keep you eyes and your pencil "in-sync" with each other. #3 Choose a partner. Do a blind contour, continuous-line drawing of your partner's face. |

Activity: Visual Dialogues
#1 Choose a partner. Each draw a squiggle or take your pencil for a lazy walk on the page. Swap papers. Develop further what you see in the lines or shapes. #2 Choose a partner. 1 paper. 1 mark at a time. No talking. 5 minutes. #3 Same partners. 1 paper. Make your own rules. 5 minutes. |

Activity: Faces & Vases
#1 Start with your regular drawing hand (right or left) First, re-trace over the lines of the face profile. Second, draw the missing profile on the other side. Adjust or repeat as needed to get a symmetrical shape. Then do the same exercise with your non-drawing hand. |

Activity: Upside-Down Drawing
Choose between the three available drawings. Turn the drawing upside down. Start anywhere you like but don't think about what you are drawing. Move from line to line, space to space, fitting together the parts as you go. Don't turn right-side-up until you are finished. |

Activity: Hands
#1 Pre-Instruction: Hold your non-drawing hand in a comfortable position. Draw your own hand. #2 Place transparency with cross-hairs over your hand with white paper underneath. Relax your hand. Close one eye. Draw the edges of your hand with a dry-erase marker. Draw what you see. Keep your hand very still. Use as much detail as possible. Remove your hand. #3 Set a ground on grid paper. Rub paper with vine charcoal stick or graphite stick. Smooth with tissue to get an even tone. #4 Use the transparency drawing to re-draw your hand outline on the grounded paper. The cross-hairs will help guide where to put your lines and shapes. When you have finished copying the transparency then set it aside. Pose your actual hand into the same position. Closing one eye, refine the edges of your drawing. (Think about your contour drawings from before.) Half close your eyes to see the large shapes of light and shadow. Use your eraser to draw out the highlights. Use your pencil to darken the shadow areas. |
